Since its inception the Southern California Dance Theatre has built up its repertoire to three annual stage productions representing classical story ballets, choreographic projects and children's performances.
MESSAGE TO THE SCDT COMMUNITY
We’re touched by the messages of concern and support coming in over the last couple of weeks from folks near and far. It’s a great reminder of how precious SCDT and this community are to so many people.
In these uncertain times, we’re committed more than ever to engaging the diverse community of Long Beach, especially young people, in the power of dance. We’re hearing from parents and dancers that ballet has been a helpful constant in their lives during this time, especially with young people being out of school and parents staying home. We talk a lot about the power of dance and the arts to bring people together. Maybe dance and the arts can also bring all of us the mental and emotional health that we all need right now.
SCDT has been offering Zoom ballet classes to currently enrolled students as a replacement for our classes at our Long Beach studio. The dance classes allow us to capture the joy of dance, rehearse for competitions and performances even as we are staying home. We follow CDC guide-lines and are now offering both on-line and on-site classes (limited number of students).
A lot of people have asked about the economic impact of SCDT since we had to cancel the Spring workshop and festival. Our Spring production of Alice in Wonderland was postponed and became a virtual production this summer. And our annual production of The Nutcracker has also been postponed until late Winter. SCDT has some operating reserves – we are not in a financial crisis yet – but each week creates more uncertainty, which makes meeting our organizational and operational obligations that much harder.
If you’d like to help SCDT, please consider becoming a monthly supporter, at whatever level of giving is manageable for you. Reliable monthly support helps us immensely with future planning.
